Creating Cross-references

Cross-references allow you to jump directly from one entry to another. You may wish to insert cross-references into certain entries, for example homonym entries, to link them to their related entries.

You can create cross-references in descriptive fields where the field content is text-only. It is not possible to create a cross-reference in descriptive fields where the field content consists of picklist values, numeric data or multimedia files. You can only create a cross-reference if it is specified in the layout .

The formatting of the cross-references is set up using the Layout Wizard. You should choose a layout that includes distinctive formatting for cross-reference text. This will make your cross-references clearly visible in the entry pane.

To create a cross-reference:

  1. Search for the entry to which you want to add a cross-reference.

  2. Choose a layout that includes distinctive formatting for cross-reference text.

  3. From the Entry menu, select Edit. MultiTerm switches to edit mode and the background of the entry pane changes colour.

  4. Select the label of text field where you want to add a cross-reference, and press the [Enter] to open the editing box.

  5. In the editing box, select the cross-reference text and right-click to open the Create Cross-reference dialog box.

  6. In the Create Cross-reference dialog box, specify the target term for your cross-reference:

  7. Select a language from the Index list.

  8. Search the termbase for the cross-reference target term by entering search text in the Search box. Click Search. MultiTerm searches the termbase for matching terms in the specified language. Results are displayed in the Hit list.

  9. Select a term from the Hit list and click Create to confirm the cross-reference. The Create Cross-reference dialog box is closed and you are returned to the editing box of the active field.

  1. Press [Enter] to close the editing box. The cross-reference text is formatted according to the properties specified in the active layout.

  2. Select Save Entry from the Entry menu to save the changes you have made and to exit edit mode. The entry is saved to the termbase and the cross-reference is now available to other termbase users.

  3. To check the cross-reference you have just created, click on the hyperlink in the entry pane: MultiTerm jumps to the target term and displays the corresponding entry.
