Working with Network Termbases

- Local Area Network. A network in which computers are linked to each other via Ethernet connections. This is commonly used within companies. MultiTerm can be deployed as a client/server system on a LAN.

- Wide Area Network. A network that includes nodes distributed over a larger geographic area that can be served by a LAN. "Wide" indicates that the area covered can vary enormously. A WAN may mean two LANs, each covering a building, connected together or may mean an organisation that has branches all around the globe.

- Distributed Component Object Model. Extends the Component Object Model (COM) to support communication among objects on different computers, on a LAN, a WAN, or even the Internet.

- database used to store terminology and related information. Consists of a termbase definition outlining the structure of termbase entries, and termbase data.

- the middleware of the MultiTerm iX system. MultiTerm Server is the hub of the system and handles all communication between MultiTerm clients and the database server where termbases are stored.

Working with Remote Termbases

You can access termbases on a LAN (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide Area Network) connections through a DCOM (Distributed Component Object Model) connection. You must be granted access to the remote termbase via MultiTerm Administrator.

The termbases are hosted by a MultiTerm Server machine which uses a MSDE or SQL Server.

If another user is editing an entry, you will be able to search for and view it, but you will not be able to edit it until they have finished editing.
