If the guest PC has captured the host serial port, and the program using the COM port times out, the serial port is released to the host PC.</P> <P>When the Wait for modem command option is not selected, the guest PC will attempt to capture the host PC serial port at startup only. If the serial port has already been captured, the guest PC will not be able to capture it. If the guest PC succeeds in capturing the serial port, the serial port is not released to the host PC until the guest PC is shut down.</P> <P CLASS=NOTE><B>Note</B>: The Wait for modem command option is useful if you use the COM port on the guest PC only infrequently. The COM port setting can be retained without disabling the host PC's ability to use the port. Also, this option allows a guest PC to capture and release the serial port while the guest PC is still running. <LI><B>Text file<BR> </B>When this option is selected, the guest PC sends COM port output to a text file.</P> <P CLASS=NOTE><B>Note</B>: The text file may be located on any accessible host PC disk drive.<BR> </UL> <H2>COM1 and COM2 ports</H2> <P>If you have a serial device connected to the <A HREF="../../shrd/pgs/hostguest.htm">host</A> PC, and you want to make it accessible to the guest PC, use the Host serial port option, and specify the host port to which the device is attached.</P> <P CLASS=NOTE><B>Note</B>: If you want to connect to the Internet from the guest PC, using shared networking is the recommended method. Using a modem connected to the COM1 port is not recommended for this purpose. See <A HREF="../../vpc06/pgs/vpc6SharedIP.htm" >Setting up shared networking</A>. </P> <H2>Handheld Organizers</H2> <P>Virtual PC provides serial port support for handheld organizers such as Handspring and Palm devices.</P> <P>To use your Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) with Virtual PC: <BR> <OL> <LI>Specify the COM port setting for the guest PC. Use the Host serial port option, select the appropriate Host serial port, and deselect Wait for modem command. <LI>Install on the guest PC the Windows version of the PDA desktop software.<BR> <LI>Connect your PDA through the Host serial port that you selected in step 1, and synchronize with the PDA desktop software.
