ÿþ<HTML> <LINK REL=StyleSheet HREF="../../shrd/style.css" TYPE="text/css"> <HEAD> <TITLE>Specifying networking settings</TITLE> <META HTTP-EQUIV="content-type" CONTENT="text/html;charset=iso-8859-1"><META NAME="DP" CONTENT="1.9/3.1.1"><META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="Ethernet, web, e-mail, LAN, modem"> </HEAD> <P> <H1>Specifying networking settings</H1> <IMG SRC="../gfx/NetSet1.gif"> <P><B>To change the networking settings:</B> <OL CLASS=STEP> <LI>Bring the guest PC window to the front. <LI>On the Edit menu, click Settings. <LI>Click the Networking setting. <LI>Select the desired option: <UL CLASS=STEP> <LI><B>None</B> <OL CLASS=SUBSTEP> <LI>Click None.<BR> </OL> <LI><B>Shared Networking</B> <OL CLASS=SUBSTEP> <LI>Click Shared networking (NAT). </OL> <LI><B>Virtual Switch</B> <OL CLASS=SUBSTEP> <LI>Click Virtual switch. <LI>Click the arrow next to the Virtual switch box, and specify the desired scope of the network. </OL> </UL> <LI>Click OK or Restart.</P> </OL> <P CLASS=NOTE><B>Note</B>: If a guest PC is currently running, and you change the networking setting, you must restart the guest PC. <H2>Networking settings</H2> <UL> <LI><B>None<BR> </B>When this option is selected, Virtual PC does not support networking from the <A HREF="../../shrd/pgs/hostguest.htm">guest</A> PC.</P> <P>This option is recommended when the host PC is not on a network, or if you are not accessing the Internet through Virtual PC. This can prevent possible delays if the guest PC software checks the network controller. <LI><B>Shared Networking<BR> </B>When this option is selected, Virtual PC shares the IP address of the host PC.</P> <P>When you choose to share an IP address, you are able to alternate between the host and guest PCs, and access the Internet without resetting any network information.</P> <P>For more information see <A HREF="../../vpc06/pgs/vpc6SharedIP.htm" >Setting up shared networking</A><BR> <LI><B>Virtual Switch<BR> </B>When this option is selected, the guest PC is given its own unique address on the network. Virtual PC accomplishes this by configuring the guest PC with a virtual Ethernet card.</P> <P>When you select Virtual Switch, the host PC's IP number is not shared with the guest PC. You must use an IP number that you enter in the Network Control Panel under Windows.</P> <P>The default network scope setting is Local, host and external. This setting allows you to access all PCs on the network, including other guest PCs and any PCs external to the host. This setting is recommended for most users.</P> <P>Additional network scope settings available with the Virtual Switch are: <LI>Local Only<BR> </B>This setting allows you to limit the guest PC's access to the network to other guest PCs only.
