<H1>Command Line Basics</H1>

<P>Virtual PC supports a number of command-line arguments. These arguments can be
specified either by typing a command line in the Windows command shell, or by creating
a shortcut to Virtual PC and adding the command-line arguments to the shortcut.</P>

<P>To access the Windows command shell in the host operating 
system, use the Start menu:<P>

<UL>
	<LI><B>Windows 2000</B> – Start Menu/Program Files/Accessories/Command Prompt</LI>
	<LI><B>Windows NT</B> – Start Menu/Program Files/Command Prompt</LI>
	<LI><B>Windows Me</B> – Start Menu/Program Files/Accessories/MS-DOS Prompt</LI>
</UL>

<P>To add command-line parameters to a shortcut, first create a shortcut to the
Virtual PC application. After doing that, right-click on the shortcut and select Properties from
the pop-up menu. Then add the command-line parameters to the end of the Target field
in the Properties box.</P>

<P>Virtual PC has the ability to be controlled by command line arguments. A command line 
argument can be used to control certain functions in a virtual machine when Virtual PC 
starts up or after a virtual machine has launched. If an argument is not supported by a 
particular platform, it will fail silently.</P>

<P CLASS=NOTE><B>Warning:</B> The command line should be used by advanced users only.</P>

<P>Command-line arguments are 
broken out into two types – application and targeted. An application argument affects 
the entire Virtual PC application. A targeted argument only affects a specific virtual 
machine. Therefore, targeted arguments will not work unless there is a virtual machine 
targeted. Please refer to the examples for syntax.</P>
